Ben Wheeler Fire & Rescue provides emergency response for safety of life and property.  Established in 1963 and stationed at the crossroads of FM 773, 279 & 858, the department moved just feet away into a station built in 2012.   We are staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, typically consisting of 15-20 first-responder/firefighter members. The department operates 2 Fire Engines, 2 Brush Trucks, 1 water Tanker/Tinder and a light Rescue response vehicle. The BWFD district covers 44 sq miles with approximately $135M of appraised property value.  We also provide Mutual-aid to other areas in Van Zandt County, including Edom, Van, Midway and others.   Aside from the occasional project-specific grant, we rely on the generosity of our neighbors for the funds needed to purchase & maintain our equipment as well as day-to-day operating expenses.
